The Land at Cheney Washington - Page 16 The concrete floor

These photos are to share the beauty of our land south of Cheney, Washington. We are in process of creating a home on the land. Please feel free to ask questions or share your thoughts.

These photos are rather large so if you are on a slow feed please be patient.

Our concrete floor contractor showed up early Monday morning, but the concrete did not. His crew sat near the heater, cleaned equipment, and generally waited around. The building inspector came and went about 10:00 A.M. but still no concrete. Finally about 10:30 the first load arrived and the work began.

Here are the recent photos.

Here the concrete truck backs into the west end of the building and begins depositing the gray stuff.

The crew seemed well practiced pouring out the concrete and raking it around. I'm glad we didn't have to do it ourselves.

Here the crew screeds off the first couple of sections in the east end of the great hall.

Justin and I went to Spokane to take back the rented Bobcat loader. When we returned the concrete crew was almost finished, pouring out the east end.

About the 6th or 7th truck load of concrete is now outside the building with only it's chute extending back inside.

Another picture of pouring the last concrete in the center of the east end.

Here is a view looking northwest. You can still see a lot of water floating to the surface of the wet concrete.

Looking back into the building from the east. You can compare this view with several previous photos from near this location. The concrete is still very wet. Now the real finishing work begins. The crew began at the west side with trowels smoothing off the concrete. It was a couple of hours old and could be walked on if one smoothed off the footprints. Several hours of hand and power troweling remain. We installed a couple of lights and went home instead of waiting.

Moving in

The concrete crew worked until 1:00 AM the next morning finishing our floor. They got started late, the weather was cold, and it just takes a long time for the concrete to get hard enough to finish properly. We didn't do any work on Tuesday because of a family matter out of town. On Wednesday, 11-23-05 we arrived to find the floor green, but hard enough to walk on. We moved right in with our plan table and started preparing for the insulation and paneling on the east wall.

Here we are putting up panels on the east wall at last, our final wall to enclose the space.

Here Justin uses the scissor lift to screw down the panel to the girts. We spent much of the afternoon preparing the framing and track for the large 12x12 slliding door which needs to be framed before we can panel over it. Tomorrow is turkey day so we are taking some time off. Blessings to all.
