These photos are to share the beauty of our land south of Cheney, Washington. We are in process of creating a home on the land. Please feel free to ask questions or share your thoughts.
The winter of 08-09 exceeded the previous all time snow record and set cold temperature records too. We were glad to have insulated the remaining roof last fall. The final total for Spokane, WA, was 98 inches. That's too much snow to shovel on our long driveway. So, we bought a good old International TD-6 dozer. It may not snow as much next winter, but there still aren't any sunspots on the sun. The last time it went quiet so long they had a "Little Ice Age." We may have to hunker down all winter, but at least now we can doze our way out to the county road. We're too old to spend a month running a snow shovel just to get into town.
The previous page shows work on Bay 3, the Study Area. Here are a couple of photos of the completion of the Study Area
Our books have over run the 20+ book cases we previously bought at WalMart In Albuquerque. To augment bookshelf space I bought 25 8 foot boards which will be about 200 linear feet of book shelves hung on wall brackets. Before putting them up, they each got 3 coats of white enamel.
I'm including a few pictures of our completed study areas. Here we find a permanent home for Logan's piano. The poor thing has been trucked around, put in storage, and pushed into a corner for the past 4 years. Now it has a nice place to live and be used.
Besides the piano, Logan's study has space for the library and some exercise equipment. Here is the south wall of Logan's study area. You can see the niche in the wall for the computer modem and network electronics plus the TV connections.
The middle part of Logan's study area is the house library. There are 23 free standing book cases plus almost 200 linear feet of shelving on the wall. Sorting books so you can find them after 4 years in storage is still a work in progress.
This is the desk and work tables area of Logan's study. Its just about right in the center of the house. We are looking northeast in this photo.
Brads study is smaller because it doesn't have the house library. This is the north wall with the computer and such.
The 20 foot high partition wall between our initial temporary quarters in Bay 1 and the rest of our home was always intended as a temporary wall. Now that we have moved most of our stuff out of the old temporary living space in Bay 1, its time for temporary to go away. In this photo, the 12 foot high doors are gone, and the wallboard is rapidly coming down.
In this photo lots of sheetrock is gone and the R-21 insulation is hanging down. Its a shame to have had to buy all these materials and spend time building this massive wall just to take it down later, but that is the penalty for occupying the house when only part was finished. One trouble with such a large house is that all the walls are big. It took 2 pickup loads of broken sheetrock gone to the dump to clean up the mess.
More of the deconstruction progress. Insulation is mostly gone now.
The north wall runs continuously behind the steel columns. Now that the temporary wall is gone, there is a few feet of patching up to be done to complete the final north wall. That may be a project for this fall.
Here you can see the NE corner of the house with the high wall removed. If you can't remember what it looked like before there is a photo 17 at page 20. Page 20 link
Standing over by the electric panel in the NE corner of the building we now can see the whole high bay ceiling all the way to the SW corner.
From the storage mezzanine you can get an overall look at what's left of our once-cozy living space. LIke all moving out we ended up with some odds and ends that have no place to go yet. Compare this with the "moving in" photo on page 29 Page 29 link We were pretty cramped in the one bay.
This is another view of the remains of our prior living crowded space.
One nice summer day I got out the shovel and completed a conduit run out to our satellite dish. Regular readers may remember that we had to replace the HughesNet modem and cable last spring. The new cable is in conduit so it can be replaced in the future without digging. Now I can mow the lawn without mowing over the wires.
An outdoor shower has been installed on the SW corner of the building near where the hot tub is going to be. Its nice to enjoy the summer weather outdoors and will be a good place to wash off before going into the tub.
Well, that's all the photos for now. When we get something else done I may get around to posting again. Have a great summer.
