These photos are to share the beauty of our land south of Cheney, Washington. We are in process of creating a home on the land. Please feel free to ask questions or share your thoughts.
Spring turned to summer and now its fall. We escaped the wildfire season again. Summer was warm but not too hot. Finish work takes a lot of time for one man who works along while taking time for some golf now and then. By the end of September we have occupied bay 4, the master bedroom suit. That's both ends. The middle of the house is not so complicated and should go more quickly.
One of the features of our home is that there are a lot of square feet of each kind of material. Here is a photo of laying ceramic tile across the master bathroom.
This shows the tile floor of our shower space. The cement board on the walls is a relatively new product that wasn't available when Brad was a professional home builder in the 1970s. In those days if the grout between tiles leaked the backing would slowly dissolve. This new cement board is supposed to last forever wet or dry.
This shows the laundry room with the machines and a 4 foot wide counter with cabinets underneath. The door goes to the master bathroom.
We installed one of those instant on Rennai water heaters. We've found that we set the digital temperature control to the best shower temperature and then just turn on the "hot." No more mixing cold with hot to find the right temp. Its supposed to save energy. Also in this photo is a reciruclating pump that can send hot water to heat a hot tub through a heat exchanger. Our air compressor is here too. We have compressed air piping around the house. Some day it will get a finished counter over the compressor.
You need a sink in the laundry room. Fill your mop buckets.
Another picture of the laundry room from the other end. All this plumbing takes time.
This is a view of Brad's walk in closet. Hanging rods on both sides.
This is Logan's closet.
This shows another view of Logan's closet showing shelves and hanging rods.
We installed 54 lineal feet of hanging rod in the closets of Bay 4. The rods are 1" iron pipe painted to match the girts and beams. I'm greatly enjoying the big closet with plenty of space for all my clothes plus some shelves for personal items.
This photo shows the bathroom plumbing fixtures. Since Home Depot doesn't stock bidets nor urinals we bought some used fixtures from the Habitat For Humanity recycling store. A little cleaning compound and elbow grease and the porcelain is as good as new. The price was $50 each instead of $400 or so at a plumbing supply store. The bifold doors is a linen closet.
Here is the vanity area with lights, mirrors, cabinets, and sinks installed. I put off the doors and drawers until next winter. Bay 2 insulation and ceiling needs to be done before it freezes so this will have to wait. At least its functional.
Logan moved a small couch and table into some vacant space in the master bathroom. The room ended up with more windows than any other room in the house so its a good place to sit and read or whatever.
In this picture you can see the tile work in the bath, although the colors aren't very good in these photos. the tile stripe is a golden color that works well with the strong yellow paint. We have opposing shower heads that could be used for 2 people, or you can have water from both sides at once. A hand shower on a hose is also there.
The Jacuzzi bath tub is here, but the tile work has been postponed until next winter. Bay 2 ceiling insulation takes priority. By next year it will have matching tile work around the tub, and it will be connected which it is not now.
The hall closet does not get a door. It is intended to hang winter coats and such near the back door.
This is a view of the hall looking toward the bedroom. Walk in closets are on the right.
This photo shows the finished master bedroom. The archway leads down the hall to the bathroom.
This picture shows the east side of the master bedroom. You can see a bit of the unfinished ceiling in Bay 2 in the distance at the top of the photo.
This picture shows the NE corner of the master bedroom. The bookcases and exercise equipment will eventually be moved to Logan's study in bay 3 next year when that is finished.
The ceiling in bay 2 still only has the R-10 insulation that came with the building and all the exposed (heat transfer) purloins that support the roof. It is the last bay left to install additional R-30 plus air space and broken heat transfer, plus sheetrock. Justin is coming to help for a couple of weeks so the insulation and wallboard should be in place by the end of October.
This view is the south part of bay 2. I had to take the unit heater down because it is in the way of the insulation and sheetrock. It goes back up when that's finished.
We moved all the tools and such that has been occupying bay 2 for the past 2 years into bay 3. That clears out bay 2 for the scissor lift and work on the ceiling. Note that bay 3 already has one finished wall and a finished ceiling. This location will be Logan’s study when its done.
That's all for now. Maybe I'll post some completed views when Bay 2 and 3 are being completed.
