1 January cold 2010

After the record snow of the 2008-2009 winter, we were glad that the 2009-2010 winter had less snow. It did get cold though. Our little wood stove kept up most of the time, though our wood pile ran out by December. Brad had to go out and cut dead trees in the cold to keep the house warm.

In late May we traveled to Eugene, Oregon where Logan's daughter Elle graduated from University of Oregon Law School.

Here is Logan and daughter Elle in front of the Law school.

3 dead end

On the way home from Eugene, Oregon, we decided to cross the mountains into Eastern Oregon and then head north instead of taking the usual freeways north to Portland and then east along the Columbia River. As this photo shows, they still had too much snow in the mountains at the end of May. We had to backtrack and move north a few miles to try another road. The other road had been plowed so we got through. It was an interesting variation on the 400 mile trip.

4 loft wall modification

One work item this summer was the removal of the high wall which originally divided our space. The temporary wall extended up to the bottom of the roof support beam. Now the storage mezzanine only has a safety railing on both sides. Plumbing vent and radon vent pipes that once hung on the wall are now suspended from the beam.

Once the upper wall was removed it was time to begin work on our larger kitchen. The move from our temporary kitchen to the larger kitchen will be done in a couple of steps. First put in part of the new kitchen. Then remove old kitchen. This photo shows the back of the wall where the temporary small kitchen now exists.

This is the SE corner of the new kitchen. A soffet above the cabinets will cover wiring and hood vent duct.

7 kitchen wall 3

This part of the kitchen wall is behind the guest bathroom. It has plumbing for kitchen and bathroom. It was insulted when it was the boundary between warm and unheated parts of the house.

8 kitchen wall 4

This is the south kitchen wall by the window. As is common the sink will be in front of the window. There is also hot water for a dishwasher to the right of the sink, and cold water past that for the refrigerator. An unusual feature is the compressed air piping in the wall.

9 bagpipe band

In summer Brad traveled to Albuquerque where Justin is part of the Mac-Tire of Skye pipes and drums band. This is Justin playing his pipes.

10 kitchen wall done

We finished the kitchen wall and painted it red. We are running out of places to put stuff that needs a shop. Oh well.

11 kitchen wall done 2

This is another view of the completed kitchen wall. I need to put in the floor and then cabinets. I have floor tiles in a stack still.

12 entry tile and pantry

The first 4 feet in front of the sliding glass doors gets ceramic tile, same color as our bathrooms. We also put in a small pantry closet in the corner of the kitchen by the door.

13 hang speakers

This year I got my old Altec "Voice of the Theater" speakers out of storage, had the woofers reconditioned, and hung them on the wall. They make a pretty good sound. The smaller speakers have excellent tweeters to fill in the highest notes.

14 November 2010 snow

This winter 2010-2011 is starting out to be more snowy than last year. I hope it won't be another record like 2 years ago. Logan has moved her rocking chair over near the wood stove. We now have more ceramic tile on the floor in front of the sliding glass door.

deer 12 6 2010

This mule deer climbed up the snow pile south of our house and stared in our window.

Well, that's all the photos for now. When we get something else done I may get around to posting again.
